1090 Don Mills Rd
Toronto, Ontario
Joey Don Mills is located in Toronto's very first open air shopping centre, Shoppes at Don Mills. This is the second Joey Restaurants location in Ontario, the first one being next to The Eaton Centre. Offering a casual fine dining environment and a reasonably priced ethnically diverse menu, it's no wonder they become as popular as they have!
Joey Don Mills Restaurant
Dining Area
If you're looking for a nice quite place, this may not be your best option. The music here is pretty prominent, but not loud in a way that it intrudes conversation and warrants yelling. I kind of liked the atmosphere. Really stylish and chic, without being pretentious --perfect for lunch or post work get-togethers.
Pretty lit up stairway to the upper floor and washrooms
Food and Drink Menus
Left: Ambrosia Martini ($8.99 / 2 oz) -Smirnoff raspberry vodka, Blue curacao, sour raspberry & lemonade with cranberry juice; Right: Gringo Cervaza ($5.50 / 14 oz) - origin: The Beach
Killer Ahi Tuna Tacos ($11.99) -seared rare, toasted sesame, ginger coleslaw, wasabi aioli
I ordered these Killer Ahi Tuna Tacos for dinner even though they are meant to be an appetizer. My appetite was rather small that night! Anyways, these tacos ended up being very messy to eat. The crunchy shell breaks into a million pieces when you bite into it, and the bed of coleslaw inside it just spills out. But I didn't actually mind that as much as the disappointing combination. The coleslaw, the tuna, and the wasabi sauce, they all tasted fine separately. In fact I really liked the tuna. Tasty and fresh. But for whatever reason thrown into the rest of the ingredients, it just didn't work. The coleslaw flavours were too prominent, and covered-up (instead of enhancing) any freshness from the tuna. I felt like I was eating mushy coleslaw tacos.
Mushroom Cheddar Burger ($14.49)
Rob order this, and midway through he made a comment that "This burger is too good to be healthy". I only had a small taste, but I'd have to agree with that statement. The gigantic juicy burger is overflowing with mushrooms, and topped with no shortage of sauce. I also loved the fries that came with it. Usually I don't care for fries after they get cold, but these ones were equally as tasty after cooling a bit. So potatoey and good!
Bomaby Butter Chicken ($17.49) - almond basmati rice, grilled naan
To be honest I don't get it when people go to a fried chicken house and order shrimp. Similarly, this Bombay Butter Chicken seemed kind of out place on the Joey's menu. I'll have to admit it wasn't bad; the butter chicken sauce had a nice spicy kick, and was creamy to a point of puree. But at the end of the day, I think I'll turn to non-fusion Indian restaurants for my butter chicken cravings.
Ahi Tuna Club ($16.49) -grilled rare, bacon, red pepper, relish, arugula, panko onion rings
While I didn't personally try any of this Ahi Tuna Club my friend Vivian who ordered it could not stop raving about it. Judging by how much I liked the tuna from the Killer Ahi Tuna Tacos, I can imagine just how enjoyable a larger slab of it on a burger bun can be. Will need to order this next time. :)
Pumpkin Spiced Mini Donuts ($7.99)-with coffee Dulce de Leche for dipping
I love cinnamon, so these Pumpkin Spiced Mini Donuts were perfect for me. Reminded me of gingerbread cookies! They're just like Timbits, but warm and crunchy on the outside. I could eat them just on their own, but the sweet coffee dulce de leche makes it twice the indulgence. Perfect for sharing...or for yourself! :)
