A collaboration from the makers of Parts and Labour and Executive Chef Matty Matheson (@mattydeathbro), comes Queen West area's newest destination for burgers: The P&L Burger (@thepnlburger). Located just a couple doors down from the well-established Burger's Priest, they definitely have a lot to prove in the burger world. In contention for this new joint is the eponymous burger "The P&L", which has already clinched a championship title of CMT's Burger Wars. Just last week prior to their official opening, I had the opportunity to taste this prized P&L burger as well as all that Chef Matty's menu has to offer.
P&L Burger
Entering the burger bar, you are embraced by the very utilitarian decor. Stark white painted walls, a huge logo, and barely 10 counter seats in the house - this is definitely a pick-up-and-go kind of place!
Similar to the decor, the menu is straight forward and similar to other take-out focused burger joints: a handful of burger options differing only by topping combinations, accompanying sides, and standard beverages.
The Philly ($9)- American Cheese, Sauteed onions & mushrooms, hot peppers, mayo
The P&L ($9)- Cheddar, Bacon-onion jam, iceberg, dill pickle mayo
The Hamburger ($8) - Tomato, Red onion, Pickle, Iceberg, P&L Sauce
The Deluxe ($9) - Bacon, American Cheese, Tomato, Red onion, Iceberg, P&L sauce
The Italian ($9) - Mozzarella, Roasted hot & sweet peppers, Sauteed onions, Marinara sauce
Regardless of which burger you decide on, your sandwich will start with a a 7 ounce patty made with Ontario chuck beef. After sampling a few, I think my favourite of the night would have to be The P&L. The combination of sauteed mushrooms and bacon onion jam just won me over. I can see why it was crowned best burger! Another high on the list was The Deluxe. Think a fully loaded cheeseburger with an addictive sauce, that is apparently a secret to even some of the staff. Whatever it is, it gives the whole thing a nice spicy kick.
Poutine ($5.5)
And for the vegetarians out there, not to despair. You have numerous options! There is a vegetarian patty available with their Big Tempah burger ($9), a legitimately satisfying cheesecurds Poutine ($5), or why not try a healthy Kale Caesar Salad ($5)? As if you really needed another reason to love Caesar salad.
My night ended with a realization that my eyes are definitely bigger than my stomach. That being said, I left as one very full and happy girl. And now that The P&L Burger is officially open 7 days a week from 11am to 11pm, I will definitely be back for some award winning burger!
