[North York] Han Ba Tang

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usLocation Review
4862 Yonge St
Toronto, Ontario
(416) 5 46-8218

Just when you thought the Yonge and Sheppard area in North York already had enough Korean restaurants, along comes Han Ba Tang (@han_ba_tang), the newest addition to the block. With a name that translates from its native language as "one full round", Han Ban Tang's restaurant owner aims to combine her decade long experience in authentic Korean cuisine, with modern culinary ideas. She refers to her cuisine as "young fusion Korean" and maintains a menu which she constantly revises in hopes to inspire appreciation of the Korean cuisine from a younger population. Young or old, Han Ba Tang's deep background story, warm hospitality, innovative dishes, and original drink menu will easily win over many a crowd.

[Toronto] Smoque N' Bones

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usLocation Review
869 Queen St W
Toronto, Ontario

Website

A little while back, I stopped by Smoque N' Bones (@SmoqueNBones) for dinner. At the time it was the new kid on Toronto's Queen West block, and was owner Alex Rad's initiating establishment. Prior to picking up the kitchen knife, Rad was a corporate finance professional. But make no mistake, this is no amateur spot. Smoque N' Bones set out to be an authentic Southern smokehouse, and it definitely delivers it well.

[Toronto] The Happy Hooker

border="0"Location Review
887 Dundas Street W
Toronto, Ontario
(416)603-4665
Website

If you did an internet search for "The Happy Hooker", you might get some pretty risqué search returns. Don't worry, today's restaurant review is more than suitable for work. Some time ago in February, I was invited to a media tasting at The Happy Hooker (@happyhookertdot). Captained by Attilio Pugliese (@attilio25), this affordable seafood haven opened just under a year ago, celebrating its one-year anniversary this Wednesday March 5. In celebration, the establishment has been offering many promotions this week, including FREE fish and chips on anniversary day. Definitely check out their Twitter and Facebook pages for more details!

Okay, now back to the food.

[Boston] Mr. Bartley's

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usLocation Review
1246 Massachusetts Ave
Cambridge, MA 02138

Being a big fan of the show Diner's Drive inns and Dives, I was ecstatic to know that my vacation schedule in Boston permitted a meal at Mr. Bartley's Gourmet Burgers, a famous Burger joint located next to Harvard University which was featured on the show.

Hosted by the one and only Guy Fieri, the episode highlights the best that Mr Bartley's has to offer: burgers and onion rings. Billy Bartley (son of the founder, Joe Bartley) has been learning the craft of burger making since he was 13, and ensures each burger uses only the freshest ingredients and minimal preservatives. Just a pinch of kosher salt on each! Guy Fieri ended up leaving very satisfied, and so I was definitely looking forward to having the same experience!

[Vancouver] Shady Island Bar and Grill

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usLocation Review
3800 Bayview Street
Richmond, British Columbia

Today's restaurant review is located in the historical village of Stevenston nearby Vancouver. The area has lots of little shops, and a boardwalk guiding you along the scenic fisherman's wharf. I was told if you wanted to get fish and chips in the greater vancouver area, Stevenston was the place to do it. Shady Island Bar and Grill, claims that they have "The Best Fish and Chips on the Boardwalk". Those were some powerful words that warranted a try. Taste test time!

Burger Week + Priest vs. Chuck

Did you hear? For the next five days from May 30 - June 3, it's The Grid's (@TheGridTo) very first Burger Week! HAPPY BURGER WEEK! So what does that mean exactly? It means it's time to put on those fat pants after you've decided which of these 20 participating burger spots to hit up. And considering a Burger Week burger will only cost you $5, perhaps I might need reinforced elastics on those fat pants...

So on a somewhat related note, this past weekend I went and had burgers twice....one right after the other. It might have been all the excitement and anticipation for burger week, or perhaps just a simple craving, but either way, it happened. I didn't intend on it playing out like that though. In fact I would've been perfectly happy eating just one burger that night. But the problem was I couldn't decide whether or not I wanted The Burger's Priest or Holy Chuck Burger, so obviously the solution was to have both, right?

Mavrik Wine Bar Tasting

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usReview Location:
676 Queen Street West
Toronto, ON
(416) 214-9429

Last week Grace and I were invited by Tim (@mrtimchan) to Mavrik Wine Bar (@MavrikWineBar) for a wine tasting event. Not being much of a wine person, I was pretty intimidated. I don't know the first thing about wine, except the fact that it's made from grapes, right? Well lucky for me, once a month Mavrik invites professional sommelier Alexander Hamilton to educate on the art of wine tasting to whoever would like to drop by. And if you ever have a chance to talk catch a conversation with owners Liz Choi and Joanne Park, they will be able to tell you how Mavrik came about. I'll elaborate more later, but it's an interesting and inspiring story!

[Hong Kong & Japan] McDonald's in Asia

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usLocation Review
Mcdonald's  in Japan & Hong Kong

I don't know about you, but I really love going to different places and seeing a new and interesting Mcdonald's menus. I know it's not fine dining or gourmet food, but something about Mcdonald's just gets to me. I guess it's one of those places that just grew up with you, been through thick and thin, early and late, and no matter what happens you'll probably still eat it. A timeless classic in my books  that you can never get bored of!

So when I went to Asia, I had Mcdonalds a couple of times. It's interesting to see how they have different twists on common North American food items (mango flavoured flavoured ice cream, taro pies, etc), but it's even more exciting when you see an item that you don't find in your homeland.

[Toronto] Food at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE)

Review Location:
210 Princes' Boulevard
Toronto, Ontario

If you've never been to CNE (or what is commonly referred to as The Ex) then your definitely missing out. Each year, this 18 day exhibition attracts thousands of people with its carnival games, food stands, fair rides, casino, animal shows, shopping, and much more. Obviously as a huge foodie, every year I only remember CNE by the countless hours roaming the food building and food carts. This year was no exception. Infact, this year I went with @misswu23 as well as a bunch of other girls, and went on an all fried food frenzy. Believe it or not, for the entire day I did not eat a single thing that was unfried. What a disgustingly amazing day.

Fran's Restaurant

Location Review:
20 College Street
Toronto Ontario
(Major Intersection: Yonge St. and College St)
I had never heard of this place before, so I was shock to learn that this location has been around since 1940! With it's broadway-like lit up signs, and their "always open" hours (even on black out holidays!), Fran's might be one of those rare dinners left in Toronto. Seriously, when you first walk in, you feel like you've teleported back a couple decades. The decor looks like it hasn't changed one bit since it opened! I wouldn't have been surprised if there was a coin operated record player somewhere in the back. The servers were also noticably friendlier than a lot of restaurants I've been to. The one that served us was very outgoing, and the way she conversed with us almost made me feel like I was a regular. As tempted as I was to the all day breakfast menu, we opted to order something else for dinner.

Beer Bistro

Review Location:
18 King Street East
Toronto, Ontario
(Major Intersection: Yonge St. & King St. E)

Beer seems to be well adored in the city of toronto. It is so versitile, and at Beer Bistro, it has taken a classier face similar to the reputation of wine. I was overwhelmed by the restaurant's beer list which was an entire booklet with hundreds of beer choices --it was definitely hard to choose just one!

Craft Burger (now Big Smoke Burger)

Review Location:
830 Yonge Street
Toronto, Ontario

Today my friend John was in the area around where I worked, so we both went to this burger joint that we've been wanting to try. We've heard a lot of good things about it and wanted to see if the testimonials lived up to what it was. We got there a couple minutes after noon, and the place wasn't too busy. We managed to get a table, and the line up to order your food was quick. However, if we showed up just 15 minutes later, the place would've been packed, and the line up would've been out the door (literally). Thank goodness. The restaurant is pretty small, with a seating area that probably wouldn't accommodate more than 30 people, but most people were just getting their burgers to go.

Left: My Black Cherry Soda, Right: John's Root Beer

We both ordered burger combos that came with a side and a drink. These tall retro-looking bottles of Boylan sodas really caught our eye, so we paid more to get these as our drinks. My black cherry soda was not bad. It tasted similar to a cherry coke except not as sweet and less "coke" flavour (if that made any sense at all...). Hard to describe. At least I didn't get that gross gritty teeth feeling after drinking it like I do most sodas.

The burgers came on a tray and were delivered to you by a waiter after you order and pay at the cash register. It was quite quick and we got our food within 10 mins of ordering. We both decided to order burgers that had the word "craft" in it, cause we figured it must be one of their signature burgers.

Left: "Craft Burger" - Saute mushrooms, rosemary garlic mayo, lettuce, tomato,
Right: Craft Burger Combo with Onion Rings.

The first thing I want to say, is I think this meal was way too over-hyped. Everyone told me how amazing it is, so I went in ordering a burger, and expecting a steak. But even with that being said, the burger was quite good. The first bite in I noticed that the meat was a little overcooked and dry, but as you worked your way to the middle of the patty, it was more moist and juicy. The beef didn't taste too processed, and it wasn't drenched in oil like most burgers. It was very slightly under flavoured but the rosemary garlic mayo made up for it. The onion rings were also quite good. It was made with a breaded batter (similar to what you make cutlets with), and was piping hot when it came out. The onion inside wasn't all shriveled up, allowing for an equal balance of onion and batter. Despite the fact that I prefer tempura-batter onion rings more, I really enjoyed these.

"Craft Spicy" -caramelized onions, spicy chipotle, tomato, and lettuce.
This was John's order, and unfortunately I couldn't get a good picture, nor did I get to taste it. He seemed like he enjoyed the meal though. I tried some of the fries, and they really remind me of the fries from "The Grill" in Waterloo. The next most similar would be New York Fries, but not as crispy. They are more like the softer, restaurant-style fries. I liked that they weren't overloaded with salt.

For the same price as a McDonald's meal, is Craft Burger better than most fast food joints? Yes. Is it the best burger I've ever had? Probably not. But none the less, a very very good burger place in Toronto.

My friend John also runs a food blog devoted entirely to burgers, and his is more of a detailed a review of the entire restaurant rather than my quick look at the food. So if you want to read up on his Craft Burger experience, as well as other burger joints around Toronto, go check out his burger blog!

Edit: Craft Burger has now changed it's name to Big Smoke Burger. Different name, but still the same great burgers!

The Bombshelter Pub

Review Location:
Student Life Centre, University of Waterloo
200 University Avenue West
Waterloo, ON

So yesterday the topic of university life came up between some of my friends. We all went to University of Waterloo, and the most memorable place on campus by a long haul would be the campus pub known as the The Bombshelter Pub or "Bomber" for short. Every Wednesday would be bar night with cheap drinks and awesome music. Line ups would get pretty crazy at times, so to avoid that we would go early for dinner and stay the entire night. As a tribute to some of the best times of my life, I think I owe it Bomber to feature their food for today's blog post.

"The Bomber Burger"

There are lots of things to order from the bomber menu, but this is undeniably the best thing to have. I've tried other things like casadeas, wings, nachos, and they are all alright, but doesn't compare to the bomber burger with a large heaping of super yummy criss-cross fries. The burger has a well seasoned patty, and the fries never disappoint. (Except sometimes when the fries get cold it doesn't taste that good. But I guess that's will all fries..) Pair it with some beer and you've got yourself a pretty satisfying meal.

Oh how I wish so much to have this on a Wednesday night again!
